im 17 and extremely stressed at this point. ive been crying and shaking not to mention my blood pressure is already high (162/101) thats before i was stressed and right now it just feels like my heart is going to beat out of my chest. i think im having real bad anxiety right now bc im having trouble breathing and i havent eaten anything in 12 days and i have lost 20 pounds. i lose my appetite when im stressed. i was 5′11″ and 112 lbs now. ive been drinking lots of water but if i eat anything i get nauseous. please help how do you manage stress or anxiety or whatever this is. right now i just feel absolutely horrible!

High Blood Pressure and the Use of Medication

The use of medication as the primary form of treatment for High Blood Pressure has come on in leaps and bounds over the past fifty years and what was once a very inexact science has now become one where by and large it is very exact. The treatment programmes that were instigated seem very primitive in hindsight and thankfully now with the introduction of increasingly sophisticated drug therapy matters have moved ahead somewhat.

As recently as just over fifty years ago, a diagnosis of High Blood Pressure or Hypertension was in fact viewed as roughly identical to being given a form of death sentence. The prognosis was such that most medical experts knew that the high blood pressure would lead to a stroke, it was just that there was very little that a healthcare professional could do about it. The only aspect in question was where and when the stroke would occur.

The major treatment approach of High Blood Pressure Medication at the time largely consisted of advising patients to have a diet that was low in salt, lots of “bed rest” and possibly the use of sleeping pills.

Drug treatment for those suffering from High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) can significantly increase the lifespan and reduce mortality rates accordingly and to millions of people the world over (myself included) these drug related therapies have been very much a life saver.

However as with most things, the use of drug therapy, whilst extremely useful in most cases, is not always the best choice for people in certain cases.

For those suffering with moderately raised blood pressure, mild incidences of Hypertension and no incidences of Heart Problem, you can usually bring blood pressure down to normal levels in a bout a year of starting lifestyle changes. Changes like these can help sufferer’s of high blood pressure manage HBP over the longer term as well since as we all know Hypertension does not go away. Successful management of high blood pressure like this ensures that in some cases (and it does have to be stressed here that we are talking about some cases) the use of medication can and does become unnecessary.

Whenever and wherever, the instigation of non drug therapies is encouraged and even if not successful in isolation, the end result means that the amounts of drugs and the types used can be of a more reasonable amount and type.

We have to stress once again that whenever possible non drug “lifestyle therapies” such as the reduction in the intake and consumption of alcohol, reduction in the consumption of sodium related products, loss of weight, cutting back on and the possible cessation of smoking has to be encouraged. These are now being added to with increased usage of relaxation techniques and other “anti-stress” controls such as increased exercise.

The use of alternative non drug related therapies for some is not an option. In some cases, the phrase High Blood Pressure medication really does apply to drug related therapies. We plan to take a look at these therapies in subsequent articles.

Basically, fragile balloon-like areas may develop. Thus, an individual may die, if the artery pops. For a fortunate few, aneurysms are discovered before time runs out. However, the odds are not in the patient’s favor.

Also, odds are not in the patient’s favor when hypertension results in brain damage. Most Americans know someone who has suffered a stroke. Sometimes, forewarning signs, like distorted vision, slurred speech, or dizziness give an individual time to reach the emergency room for immediate treatment; usually, a stroke causes devastating health problems or death. For the people fortunate enough to survive, ambulation, speech, and even the ability to eat are some of the long-lasting effects. The patient then faces months, or years, of extensive therapy attempting to regain former skills most people take for granted. Plus, he/she has an increased probability of subsequent strokes.

In addition to strokes, probably the most common health risk of hypertension is a heart attack. As excessive pressure weakens the heart muscle, a person is at risk for coronary artery disease, an enlarged heart, and eventual heart failure. Sadly, high blood pressure is often diagnosed after the diseased heart has surrendered to the illness. Therefore, the best preventative measures against hypertension are periodic pressure checks, and high blood pressure medicine to manage the condition before it becomes a huge problem.

Although a myriad of medicines are available, doctors may decide what treatment is best based upon the patient’s age, ethnicity, other medications, and allergies. All of the issues may potentially determine how an individual will react to high blood pressure medicine. Nevertheless, beta-blockers have been commonly used, in the past, to control hypertension: “These slow down the heart, reducing the amount of work that it has to do, and lowers an important hormone. This opens the blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to work”. In truth, the information mentioned above represents only a few of the consequences, and medicinal treatments, of high blood pressure. However, the short list is a great argument for further exploration of the disease and subsequent use of high blood pressure medicines. Heart attacks, strokes, and aneurisms are three often-fatal results of neglecting to treat hypertension. Also, beta-blockers and diuretics are only two of the many options for medicinal solutions. So, in order to avoid becoming a medical statistic, periodically have a health care professional check for possible hypertension, especially if a history of high blood pressure runs in the family. You may want or need high blood pressure medicines.

A healthy diet is one that is low in calories and fat, because one way to lower high blood pressure naturally is to lose weight.

If a person maintains a healthy weight, they can often lower their blood pressure without the aid of medication.

A person who has high blood pressure who wishes to have better health should drink alcoholic beverages in moderation, or not at all.

Some experts have also suggested taking a dietary supplement that is rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium and fish oils.

These things can also be found in a healthy diet in varying amounts.

A person with high blood pressure should consult their doctor and then meet with a nutritionist to learn about the kind of diet and foods they should be eating.

Another thing to increase the overall health of a person with high blood pressure is for them to have an active lifestyle and increase their exercise and physical activity.

They should also learn stress management techniques, such as yoga, Tai Chi, or meditation, if they are the kind of person who gets stressed easily.

What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours.

There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees’ beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything up for you to take home in a little foil doggy bag. Will that work? Meanwhile, I’ve arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the toilets. Gays are allowed to sit with each other, lesbians do not have to sit with gay men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangements for the gay men’s table too. To the person asking permission to cross dress - no cross dressing allowed. We will have booster seats for short people. Low fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot control the salt used in the food, so we suggest those people with high blood pressure taste the food first. There will be fresh fruits as dessert for diabetics. The restaurant cannot supply “No Sugar” desserts. Sorry!

For a very long time, doctors considered stress to be a contributing factor only and not a cause. But new evidence reveals that chronic stress is indeed a major cause of hypertension.

Everyone gets stressed out at times. The difference is that some can manage their stress well and take measures to relieve it while others ignore it, letting it build up until it explodes or results in other negative consequences or even illness. No matter what the circumstances, stress can be easily managed when one knows the right techniques and makes the effort to use them when needed.

There are countless ways to relieve stress. The simple pleasure of listening to music, for instance, can be very calming. The next time you feel like tearing your hair out put on your favorite music and it will work every time. This tried and tested method will certainly put your mind at ease.

Breathing in a certain way is also well known to relieve stress and has recently proved to work directly on blood pressure as well. A new method called “slow breathing with music” combines a breathing technique proven to lower blood pressure with relaxing music. This great new method offers numerous health benefits and takes only a few minutes a day.

High blood pressure can also be caused by a poor diet. You are what you eat, as they say, and our diet plays a very important role in regulating our blood pressure. For example, many people are now aware that excess sodium can make blood pressure shoot sky high. So it’s important to avoid salty foods and snacks and to not add table salt to your meals. A normal, balanced diet offers plenty of natural sodium without the need for added salt.

Another element of a poor diet is eating too much fatty food, which usually has a high amount of the wrong type of cholesterol. This is the so-called “bad” cholesterol that forms plaque in arteries that can build up into blockages with dire health consequences.

The answer to avoiding excess sodium, fat and cholesterol is simply to eat a balanced and varied diet of whole, natural and unprocessed foods. Natural foods contain a healthy balance of nutrients that become degraded through processing. For example, a fresh fish, fried or baked simply, is healthier than a pack of “fish sticks” which have been chopped, blended with starches and preservatives, dipped in salty batter and frozen.

Closely related to diet is our weight and activity level. A poor diet combined with lack of exercise will quickly lead to being overweight. Excess weight makes the heart work harder and increases blood pressure. At the same time, inactivity weakens the heart because, as a muscle, the heart needs exercise to be strong and healthy. Poor diet, excess weight and inactivity are a recipe for disaster.

Smoking and drinking too much alcohol are popular vices but they are both major causes of high blood pressure. The answer to smoking is simply to stop, one way or another. There is no safe level of smoking. Alcohol is more complicated because in the right amount it can even be healthy. It’s a tricky balance because even a small amount of excess alcohol on a regular basis can easily raise your blood pressure. How much is too much? That’s often difficult to say because different people handle it differently, but if you have regular hangovers and/or difficulty sleeping you are definitely drinking too much and this is surely having an impact on your blood pressure.

These are some of the major lifestyle factors that can be causes of high blood pressure. Doctors estimate that up to 95% of hypertension cases are the result of lifestyle. The good news is that changes in lifestyle, such as eating better and drinking less, are often the most effective way of treating your high blood pressure.

At the same time, it’s important to note that high blood pressure can also depend on genetic factors. In fact, there are many cases of the condition with no other possible explanation. If high blood pressure runs in your family the chances are high that you will develop it too. If this is the case, treatment with medications may offer the only solution. Having said this, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will always influence your blood pressure and reduce the severity of your hypertension.
