High Blood Pressure vs Garlic

Garlic is a vegetable that is extremely beneficial to the heart and the entire cardiovascular system. It is considered to be a natural remedy for high blood pressure that has significant, positive effects when made part of a daily diet. Studies have found that by eating a single small garlic clove per day, a person can effectively manage their hypertension.

In fact some clinical studies have found garlic to decrease the systolic blood pressure by as much as 20 mm Hg to 30 mm Hg, and the diastolic blood pressure by as much as 10 mm Hg to 20 mm Hg in participants.

For instance, one 12 week study concluded that participants with high blood pressure who ingested a single clove of garlic per day had significant reductions in their systolic and diastolic blood pressure by the end of the study.

In addition, studies have also been conducted on testing the effectiveness of garlic powder taken in the form of a supplement for controlling blood pressure. These studies also found a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in participants who suffered from mild hypertension.

How does garlic lower blood pressure? It is believed that garlic can effectively lower blood pressure because it reduces spasms that occur in the small arteries. It also slows the pulse rate and modifies the rhythm of the heart. In addition, garlic can relieve gas in the digestive tract, numbness, dizziness and shortness of breath. Thus, garlic has been used as a herbal remedy as an effective method for treating various health problems aside form hypertension including infection, inflammation and heart disease.

Moreover, research has found that there are three chemicals found in garlic that are exceptionally helpful in treating high blood pressure. These chemicals are alliin, allinase, and allicin, and are particular effective for improving blood circulation.

How can you add garlic to your daily diet to manage your blood pressure? The following are two recommendations:

1. Eat fresh raw garlic cloves - you can eat a single raw clove of garlic per day with a meal or by itself. You don’t need to eat an exceptionally large clove, a small one should suffice. Just make sure the clove is fresh, as dried garlic no longer contains the properties that are beneficial for health.

2. Take garlic supplements in capsule form - This is often the preferred method, as most people don’t enjoy chewing on a raw piece of garlic. Herbalists recommend taking 300mgs of garlic capsule supplements three times daily (I.E. 3 capsules per day). Note: Be sure to read the instructions on the back of supplements before taking them.

If you decide to take garlic supplements, keep in mind that you should only do so under the supervision of a health practitioner. The reason is because garlic can thin the blood and can interact with other drugs and supplements that are prescribed for blood thinning such as Trental (pentoxifylline) and Coumadin (warfarin), aspirin, gingko, and vitamin E. Furthermore, it is often recommended that those who will be undergoing surgery should stop taking garlic as treatment a few weeks before and after surgery.

Is there any homeopathic treatment for high blood pressure?

I have no insurance and can’t afford the crazy money pit of doctors and perscriptions anymore. there must be a way for me to manage my hypertension and anxiety myself.
I am not over weight and exercise regularly. I am 42 years old and have always been in good physical condition. I don’t eat alot of salt at all.
I know about exercise and diet. Again, does anyone know of a homeopathic treatment?

High blood pressure and gestational diabetes?

I asked about this earlier today and only got one response. I’m hoping that’s just because I asked too early and that this time I get more responses!

Did any of you have both? If so, how did you manage it? I haven’t been diagnosed with either yet, but I have a feeling I will be eventually. I developed high blood pressure part way through my second pregnancy and was diagnosed as borderline gestational diabetes. My blood pressure never regulated after that (five years now) and I’m fairly certain the GD will be an issue this time as well. I’m just trying to get an idea of what I’ll be told to do to manage these serious issues!

Why is blood pressure still high even when taking medication and eating right?

**PLEASE READ**PLEASE READ**PLEASE READ** I have a loved one, who’s over 50, and is normal weight but has High Blood Pressure. She has been controlling it by eating right and taking medication about three times a day. She’s also diabetic, but she’s managing it well. On this past Monday and Wednesday (during preliminary tests for her eye surgery), 8/18 and 8/20, however her readings were quite high, with Systolic pressure (the top number) over 200 mmHg.
Why is it high? How will she lower it? Please pray for lower blood pressure and overall great health to come to her. Atheists please don’t be offended.

Current blood pressure: 170/105. Do I need to go to the ER?

It’s usually around 140/90, but none of my doctors have ever prescribed meds to manage it.
Over the last week, I’ve not felt so good, so I’ve begun to monitor my BP at home. Within the last few days, its been around 170/105.
I’m trying to get in to see one of my docs in the next few days, but is this BP high enough to need to make a trip to the ER?

• Intake around 3,000 mg of potassium daily.

3. Weight loss pills and herbs - This will artificially boost the metabolic rates via other stimulants and diet pills. Examples are amphetamines or “uppers” and ephedra herb.

It does not matter what is causing or may cause you to have high blood pressure. The important point is that if you know you are at risk you can take steps to reduce the risk and keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.

We have no control over our genes, our race or our age. These are three risk factors for some people in developing high blood pressure. African Americans are more likely to develop high blood pressure than whites. They also seem to develop it at a younger age and have higher levels.

Age is a factor in blood pressure as well. The older you get, the more likely you are to have higher blood pressure. Women usually don’t have trouble with hypertension until after menopause, unless they have a parent or other close relative with it. Men will develop hypertension as they age, with the greatest increases beginning between the ages of 35 and 55.

While race, age and genes are not something you can control there are several risk factors for hypertension which you can control. The most important is weight. Obesity leads to higher blood pressure especially in people with a body mass index over 30.0. Contributing to obesity and high blood pressure is also a lack of exercise. If you are inactive, you are more likely to be overweight and therefore develop hypertension.

Our eating and drinking habits greatly impact blood pressure. Consuming too much alcohol or salt on a regular basis also increases blood pressure. Not only overeating, but what you eat will affect blood pressure in a good or bad way.

How much stress you have and how you deal with it can influence blood pressure negatively. It is difficult to know how much stress a person is under, since many people hold it in and may not even feel overly stressed when in reality they are. When there is too much stress, other good habits are often sacrificed to deal with

the current situation. For example, during a stressful period you may not get enough sleep or exercise or may substitute good home cooked meals for high sodium fast foods.

Any one of these risk factors alone can put blood pressure levels within a dangerous range. When you couple the risk factors with one another, your problem grows exponentially. This means that if you are overweight, inactive and have a family history of hypertension, you are at a much higher risk than someone with only heredity working against them. It would be wise for anyone with the non-controllable risk factors of race, heredity, or age to keep stay physically active, maintain a healthy weight and reduce the amount of alcohol and sodium they consume. It is also important to eat a proper diet that will support a healthy blood pressure. Specific nutrients help reduce blood pressure even in those who are genetically predisposed to hypertension.

Medications usually have side effects, which may be difficult for a person to handle. Other alternatives may also help to cure high blood pressure without the sign of side effects. You should talk to your doctor because different people need different treatments. You must contact your doctor if your blood pressure is above average because taking this lightly may lead to severe complications later and discuss with your doctor that what medication would be better for you.
